On the 14th of November, four children from Barnes Farm Junior School attended a Maths Morning held at Perryfields junior School. There were 32 children in total, all from different schools around Chelmsford. We were welcomed and the head teacher explained that ‘Maths Morning’ wasn’t a test but simply a fun lesson, in which we could stretch our abilities more than in the classroom. You don’t have to be good at maths to enjoy it, and some minds work more logically than others, but if you work hard maths will become much easier.

When everyone had arrived, the maths teacher told us that for the first section of the day we would be working in the ICT suite. We started off by playing a percentage game, we had to work the percentage and pop the balloon that had the correct answer written on it. After that, we began interpreting pie charts and then we played a game called number shark. Number Shark was a series of questions and then two games, all of which we were timed on. Then the staff let us take a break in the playground before the next activity. We found out after break, that the final lesson was held in one of the classrooms.

The learning objective was ‘to identify and obtain necessary information from a mathematical problem’. The first thing we were asked to do was to answer a word problem called ‘Slick Jim’. The problem consisted of multiplication and an understanding of large integers. It also had 3 very difficult stages but they were understood after we built are confidence. Everybody who attended the Maths Morning enjoyed it and learnt lots from it. In maths sometimes when it becomes difficult, you have to think outside of the box and just believe in yourself.
