At Barnes Farm Junior school, we understand that children may still require support with their phonological understanding whcih is used to support both reading and writing. Therefore, we share phonics assessments at the beginning of the year and use this to group children within year groups accordingly.
We follow the 'Letter and Sounds' and 'Support for Spelling' programmes to ensure national expectations within each Phase (2-6) are covered.
Children are taught within whole class and small groups according to their attainment level. These groups are very flexible and children move groups regularly if necessary, depending on the progress they are making.
Interactive whiteboard programmes, spelling games, whiteboards etc are used to ensure that the teaching of phonics is practical and activity based.
